The Life in the UK Test is designed to prove that incoming citizens hold the knowledge and understanding of the culture and society of the United Kingdom. It is expected that through your revision for the exam you will learn what it means to be a modern day British citizen and will be to successfully integrate into British society upon passing the test. The test is mandatory for those applying for British citizenship or indefinite leave within the United Kingdom, although applicants aged over 65 or who have a long term condition preventing them from learning English or sitting an exam might be exempt from the test and should seek clarification.
The test will be taken at a local test centre (for help finding yours, call 0044 (0)800 0154245) and will be completed using a computer. For those not proficient with a mouse and keyboard, training and practice tests are available online and a member of staff will be able to assist you when sitting the test. A practice test will be available, at it is recommended that you use this to warm up and get comfortable before the real test. The instructions will be clear and you will have 45 minutes to complete 24 questions, of which 18 answers (75%) must be correct to pass. This works out at a little under two minutes per question, although it is strongly advised to go through and double-check your answers before the end of the test. To help you, time alerts will notify you when you are halfway through the test, as well as when you have ten minutes and two minutes to finish. The questions will be asked in four formats: multiple choice, true or false, choosing two answers from four and correct or incorrect. You will not be allowed to refer to any study material to help you answer the questions during the test. It is necessary to bring a valid photographic ID with you for presentation.
If you fail the test, don’t worry. You can retake it as many times as you wish after a minimum wait of seven days. The current cost is £34, so it is advised to try and ensure you pass at the first attempt.
The questions will be based on material drawn from the second edition of ‘Life in the UK Test: A Journey to Citizenship’. When preparing for the test, it is essential to familiarise yourself with the all facts, terms and concepts outlined in these sections. If you learn all the information in these chapters you will not only pass the test with flying colours but you will also be well on your way to gaining a rich understanding of the most fundamental aspects of British life. There is a good deal to take in, so it is recommended that you take one chapter at a time, re-reading and making notes of the facts and figures each one until you are ready for an online practice test. Once consistently passing these, you are ready for the real thing.
Good Luck!
