This test is actually putting strain on my marriage. I am British and have been married to my husband for nearly4 years and he struggles to pass this test. We both work and contribute to the system and in times of recession its difficult to be raising funds to pass some stupid test that I as a British citizen openly admit that I would not be able to pass either (and I teach in a primary school). Sorry...but it is a load of crap. My husband and I have proved that it's not a marriage of convenience and he still can not get indefinite cause of this test.

If there is to be a test then it should be fair and answerable by the majoruty of British born working class people. Immigrants dont need to know the percentage of catholics to protestants, or how many seats the uk has in the EU these type of questions are totally irrelevant and couldnt be answered by the majority of normal British Citizens

As a 55 yrs British citizen born and bred I have tried the test on several occasions and never achieved better than 50%. The test is mostly about irrelevant statistics that you will happily forget as soon as you have passed the test. If they must learn something let them learn something practical.

Pass the test first time absolutely brilliant course material. I strongly recommend it to anyone wishing to take thhe citizenship test. The course is easy to read with practical exercises and above all very informative. Those who embark on purchasing books after books to pass the test please don't waste your time, get the online material and it will get you where you want to be. It's cheap, easy to use with exercises chapter by chapter and a test simulation. I enjoyed the ride from end to finish.

This is completely an exploitation of immigrants to get money. This is a useless exercise I ever seen, all what the British know is money making. There are people who had in the county long enough and paid tax and these people to be exempted from this. If the government want to make money, they should not punish those who had been in the county long and paid taxes with the new people just came to the country and rushing to obtain British passport. This is totally unjust, irrespective so call equal opportunity policy. British passport means absolutely nothing to me, just to use as convince to travel to Europe easily and to my country, to pay a visa fee. This should be abolished, is totally money making. I don’t need to kno every stupid thing in the UK while those who born even don’t know

The idea of the test is for the person to learn about and engage with the british society, however the test makes the person to read and memorize some information and no more while most of the people who take the test probably have lived in the UK for years by the time they take the test, and have most of that information already too. I think requiring the individual to do a week of charity work would do alot better for the purpose of engaging with the society and learning about it and helping it aswell, but of course the government could not make money out of that, could they?

I think the concept of a citizenship test is absurd.I have grown up here my entire life for 21 years. I identify and see myself as british. A lot of the questions are irrelevant, regarding statistics or requiring knowledge of certain facts that I'm sure many british citizens wouldn't be aware of as they are entirely irrelevant (and why would someone be aware of such particular facts?)! What does it matter if you're not aware of the percentage of christians in the UK being roman catholics? It has nothing to do with whether someone should be eligible to be a british citizen or not. This entire thing is bollocks.

In my view the Life in the UK Test is not an effective way to 'encourage' people seeking British Citizenship to learn about the British way of life. Most of what one may learn whilst studying for this test would not be used in their daily lives in the UK. Whereas I do not see this as a money-making scheme I see this as an attempt by the UK Government to frustrate the process of granting citizenship to many, especially those who have difficulty in learning, including but not only due to language problems. The ironic thing is that I know many people who have somehow passed this test yet have required an interpreter during the Passport interview process. Astonishingly, those requiring an interpreter during their interview as a pre-requisite to being issued with a British Passport are not penalised. Those who do not have the ability to pass the test, and who are not able to obtain a Travel Document or a passport from their registered country of origin, are left in the unfortunate position of not being able to travel which means that they then cannot even travel say to meet terminally ill parents. This is a sad state of affairs and does not show the UK in a good light as far as say being an exponent of democracy.

In my opinion, the wording of the questions is very poorly done. "Smoking has increased in the UK? T/F" Since when, yesterday? Several other examples come to mind. Paraphrasing: "Who do we remember on Nov 11th? A) Veterans of the 1st world war and other wars. B) Veterans of the 1st and 2nd world war and other wars" The answer is B) but how exactly is that different than A? Is the 2nd World war not really a war? Last one: "Many people believe women should not be given equal rights and work? T/F" Define "many", 4? 40? 400?, 4000? If 4000 people say something I would consider that "many people". I am sure I could find 4000 unenlightened souls in the UK that would believe that. How about 'Most'. For a country that is this judgemental about English, this test is a disgrace. If the test should exist, which I am on the fence about, it should cover details needed to live in the country. It is not important for me to know that .3% of the UK population is Bangledeshi. Spend more time on how the government works, how to get through a productive day, what your rights are with respect to policing, major laws you need to follow, etc... When I give my kids allowance is not important. meh... End of the day, it is a multiple choice test and anybody that can read can pass it. I just don't get the point of testing trivialities and doing it poorly.

It should be more relevant to today's UK. Wayne Smith, at least you had a go, whoever you are. Mr Englishman, you should be ashamed of yourself. It is because of people like you there is a test in the first place. Also, there is a comma before "which", "38-year-old" is hyphenated and your spelling of ridiculous is wrong.

By July 2011 it'll be even worse with the new immigration law being introduced. I would suggest somewhere else like Spain with much easier immigration rules, and that's besides the fact that this countries on it's last legs anyway. GOOD luck, you'll need it. There shouldn't be so many questions about schools, grades, education systems, - what if I don't have children and am not planning to have any? Are we all considered just machines to procreate and increase British population?? It should be more neutral and only about things that apply to everybody, such as basic laws, freedoms, democratic values, etc. Testing me on knowledge about how to switch my phone provider?Who even invented that??!!!

It is really easy as long as you have a sufficient level of English and can read the book from A to Z.

The test is there for people to learn a thing or two about settling here.I know its bad on your pocket but at least you will know few bits and pieces about this Great Nation. Its Simple really if u aint intrested my dear no is forcing anyone, its only there to educate some few ignorant out there who doesn't want to learn English culture and yet are living here.its a part of the package if u wanna be living here permanantly and folowing simple rules and laws.
