I think it should be harder. I don't understand why people from UE have to take it? Our background is very similar... But People coming from far away should respect UK law and traditions. And sad thing is that even some of those with UK passport don't :( I live in UK since 9 years paying taxes, not claiming a penny from UK don't use NHS (I go via Bupa) but as I know I will stay for good I feel like having UK passport will make me feel like home here. As really the passport itself doesn't give me any practical benefits as I can travel to the same places on my Polish passport. I will apply soon , I have passed my test a while ago.

I think it's good for people to have a test to encourage them to learn relevant things about our culture, laws and procedures. // However some of the questions seem less relevant, and there should be no trick questions. The divorce question, I thought "1857 sounds right", but because the other 3 options were in the 1950s I chose one of them. // Speaking as a university educated native Briton, I didn't pass - although I'm sure I could if I studied it. But that's what I do! and I have a head start, being born here, having good English, and being used to learning & taking tests. // It seems to be another hurdle to reduce immigration. Still, I wanted to emigrate to Australia and that was very daunting (and expensive!) - so here I still am. // The questions need to be fair, and relevant. Fairness is certainly a part of British culture, at least in theory. // I suppose, since we are a small island, and quite full of people, we should be allowed to choose the cleverest and most able new citizens. (Also some who are most in need or at risk). // I welcome multi-culturalism, I grew up in such a town - but I also hear a lot of voices saying they wish to preserve British culture and rights. There needs to be a balance - moderation in all things.

I don't agree. If you want to become a citizen of a different country to the one you were born in you should understand their society and customs, and to do that you should learn about their history. I've lived in the UK for over 30 years and I've just taken the test, I have passed it, and I probably would have passed it without studying for it, but I chose to study and I'm very glad I did, I learnt a few things and it shed some light into a few others. My children, born and bread in this country, probably wouldn't have passed the exam, but that is the failure of the British education system, which doesn't mean we foreigners shouldn't learn what is needed to become a British citizen. It is your choice to become one, not your right, so if you don't want to put some effort into it, don't apply, no body is forcing you to it, this is a free country.

I am sure such test for citizenship is good idea even though most of native British people would fail it. Let us be honest - if you want to be citizen of any country you should know something about this country and why your new country has happened to be like now and how it functions today. Otherwise such new guy risk to be just alien in his/her - ironically very chosen by him/herself - new country. Such test is even more justified if we consider that in many immigrants' native countries laws, habits and religions are completely different than here in the UK. Anyway, eg. if you are Muslim - you should be awared that beating own wife is a crime here in the UK even though your Quran allows you to do it.

The test lacks common sense, a lot of it is something that we would not call general knowledge and have no impact in your everyday life in the UK whether you know it or not. An example, your toughest question listed on the site today "What percentage of Christians in the UK are Roman Catholic?" .. now honestly? what use is knowing this? is people doing a test on RE?. I would expect the questions to be more oriented towards helping the individual communicate with others in the UK, help them get along with their everyday lives. Thus I would expect a test where you can show a native UK resident and that they would answer at least 50% of it accurately. From what I can see, it's just another excuse for the UK to leech more cash and putting it towards something idiotic and going into more debt. If that is your aim, then you're doing a great job! keep it up! UK all the way. Will be looking forward to more of it, so I go on holidays and tell foreigners how great we are.

Why this strange idea that foreigners are ENTITLED to stuff?

The question I want to tick isn't given in the vote choices: should there be exemptions for people who have lived here for over 25 years? Yes! I've lived here for 30 years and feel it is outrageous that I should have to pass this test - or that I should have to pay almost £900 to apply for citizenship! The test makes sense for new immigrants, but many questions are so arcane many native Brits would fail the test without thorough study: it should be structured so that anyone of normal intelligence who has grown up here could pass the test on spec.

Let's face it the government has promised to deter and reduce the numbers of immigrants but this is typical of yet another tax To be forced upon people who are hard working tax payees.

This test is utter crap. It doesn't prove that you can speak english and contains questions that has nothing to do with the future of the UK. One question I saw, was "Where does Santa Clause Come from?" Wtf? I mean really, I need to pay £50 pounds to know that! Its all irrelevant and more than half of british people don't even know the answers to soem of the questions. All and all, its a pointless exercise that tells me nothing about the current state of the country!

The questions should actually be about basic things that we need to know in our daily lives being a citizens of UK. But I think the subjects like history and politcs are nonsense, just trying to make our life harder

I think the government should concentrate on the CRB stuff, let people pay more money on that to check their criminal record. This country is hard, no money, no jobs if someone failed the test three times, he or she has to pay a lot of money again for the same test. That's not fair at all. You are free to go and settle in my country with no citizen test. Please give us that right. Give it to gennue citizen don't give it criminals

If not, why bother keeping Nelson's column and Churchill's statue?!

This is completely an exploitation of immigrants to get money. This is a useless exercise I ever seen, all what the British know is money making. There are people who had in the county long enough and paid tax and these people to be exempted from this. If the government want to make money, they should not punish those who had been in the county long and paid taxes with the new people just came to the country and rushing to obtain British passport. This is totally unjust, irrespective so call equal opportunity policy. British passport means absolutely nothing to me, just to use as convince to travel to Europe easily and to my country, to pay a visa fee. This should be abolished, is totally money making. The idea of the test is for the person to learn about and engage with the british society, however the test makes the person to read and memorize some information and no more while most of the people who take the test probably have lived in the UK for years by the time they take the test, and have most of that information already too. I think requiring the individual to do a week of charity work would do alot better for the purpose of engaging with the society and learning about it and helping it aswell, but of course the government could not make money out of that, could they?

I think the concept of a citizenship test is absurd.I have grown up here my entire life for 21 years. I identify and see myself as british. A lot of the questions are irrelevant, regarding statistics or requiring knowledge of certain facts that I'm sure many british citizens wouldn't be aware of as they are entirely irrelevant (and why would someone be aware of such particular facts?)! What does it matter if you're not aware of the percentage of christians in the UK being roman catholics? It has nothing to do with whether someone should be eligible to be a british citizen or not. This entire thing is bollocks.

In my view the Life in the UK Test is not an effective way to 'encourage' people seeking British Citizenship to learn about the British way of life. Most of what one may learn whilst studying for this test would not be used in their daily lives in the UK. Whereas I do not see this as a money-making scheme I see this as an attempt by the UK Government to frustrate the process of granting citizenship to many, especially those who have difficulty in learning, including but not only due to language problems. The ironic thing is that I know many people who have somehow passed this test yet have required an interpreter during the Passport interview process. Astonishingly, those requiring an interpreter during their interview as a pre-requisite to being issued with a British Passport are not penalised. Those who do not have the ability to pass the test, and who are not able to obtain a Travel Document or a passport from their registered country of origin, are left in the unfortunate position of not being able to travel which means that they then cannot even travel say to meet terminally ill parents. This is a sad state of affairs and does not show the UK in a good light as far as say being an exponent of democracy.

In my opinion, the wording of the questions is very poorly done. "Smoking has increased in the UK? T/F" Since when, yesterday? Several other examples come to mind. Paraphrasing: "Who do we remember on Nov 11th? A) Veterans of the 1st world war and other wars. B) Veterans of the 1st and 2nd world war and other wars" The answer is B) but how exactly is that different than A? Is the 2nd World war not really a war? Last one: "Many people believe women should not be given equal rights and work? T/F" Define "many", 4? 40? 400?, 4000? If 4000 people say something I would consider that "many people". I am sure I could find 4000 unenlightened souls in the UK that would believe that. How about 'Most'. For a country that is this judgemental about English, this test is a disgrace. If the test should exist, which I am on the fence about, it should cover details needed to live in the country. It is not important for me to know that .3% of the UK population is Bangledeshi. Spend more time on how the government works, how to get through a productive day, what your rights are with respect to policing, major laws you need to follow, etc... When I give my kids allowance is not important. meh... End of the day, it is a multiple choice test and anybody that can read can pass it. I just don't get the point of testing trivialities and doing it poorly.

It should be more relevant to today's UK. Wayne Smith, at least you had a go, whoever you are. Mr Englishman, you should be ashamed of yourself. It is because of people like you there is a test in the first place. Also, there is a comma before "which", "38-year-old" is hyphenated and your spelling of ridiculous is wrong.

Wether native Brits can answer the questions or not is irrelevant, you want to settle in this country therefore you have to abide by the laws of this land. The test is easy if you read your course material properly unless you are really daft which i have no doubt you are. Get back in the back of the lorry the same way you entered the country and get out if you don't like the way things are done here.

Failed the test recently perhaps? That said, I do not blame you for hating the test as I only scored 7/12 which is terrible for a 38 year old Brit like me! I should be thrown out the country immediately! The test is a bit rediculous and I would only consider it valid if the vast majority of Brits scored 100%.

By July 2011 it'll be even worse with the new immigration law being introduced. I would suggest somewhere else like Spain with much easier immigration rules, and that's besides the fact that this countries on it's last legs anyway. GOOD luck, you'll need it. Q.Looking at the statistics how many people failed the free test on avereage? a. 86% 6. 75% c. 67% d 55% Answer - 86%.... see what I mean!!!

I am from the U.K., but I have repeatedly failed the online (mock) tests. The test is a total joke, I mean one of the questions asks 'Where does Santa come from?', a mythical figure FFS!!! Any of the education questions are based around the English education system, not much use iif you have spent your time living in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. I am Scottish myself and my wife is Australian, she is about to sit the test. How is she supposed to pass the test when I can't even pass the mock test. I see this test more as a way of screwing money out of people than of forcing them to learn about 'settling here'.

I read for a week, did a few questions and went for the test, passed. Rules are rules, should be abided, silly or intelligent...come on friends! cheer up!! smile everyone!! Its good to know the culture and language, makes everyone's life easy. I am a doctor and I find it difficult when someone cannot converse in common language which ever country you live in. We in Delhi want people to know english, hindi to converse. It becomes difficult for us when a someone who comes from some part of India only knowing their mother language and not the commonly known language which is Hindi and english...So, learn the culture and language, its good for brain.

Santa may be mythical, but he is still part of our culture, especially for kids! Who doesn't know that he comes from the North Pole? And, if you don't know the answers to the questions, then you buy a book and learn them! That's what tests are - it's not rocket science, and it's designed to ensure people learn English, and to select intelligent new citizens. I'm no UKIP fan - I'm a Labour man - but this country is not exactly empty, so we have to become a little choosy - I think that is a consensus among most or all the leaders these days. By the way, emigrating to Australia is harder than here! Costs a packet, and unless you're a nurse/doctor/IT guru/hairdresser/teacher or other profession they need more of, you can pretty much forget it. Unless you have $100k to "invest".

Absolutely right mate. I've failed my first attempt because I didn't even prepare for it. But I've got 15 correct out of 24 Q's. Now I asked several of my colleagues who are born british, the same questions but not a right answer. If any rasist person asks,"why shouldn't you learn about the UK history and do the test" thinking (s)he is bring patriotic and care about his country, I'll ask them all a question, HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS ACTUALLY DO THE SIMPLE JOB AROUND THEIR HOUSE LIKE recycling, not wasting natural and man-made resources or do something really good for the country or the people? How many of them. Most probably none. But when it comes to rasism they will be no:1. Shame on all of them. Do the test and ask yourself whether you are eligible to be a citizen of this country. Life in the UK is just a way of making money, a complete scam. "Day robbery" that's what i would lime to say.
