Is the test free?

No, the test costs GBP 33.28 (this includes VAT). This amount is payable directly at the test centre, just before the test. If you need to cancel or postpone the test, do it as early as possible: if you give less than a week notice, the test centre may apply a GBP 10 fee.

Can I book a test today and write it tomorrow?

No, there is a minimum waiting time of 7 days between the booking and the actual test.

When should I take the test?

You have to take the test before you apply for settlement (ILR) or citizenship. Make sure that you comply with all other requirements, and when you do, take the test.

I live in Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man: do I have to take the test?

Yes, you do. But your test will be paper-based, not computer-based, and you will have to answer 25 questions instead of 24. 6 questions will be related to the island where the test is taken.

I am a European citizen. Do I need to take the test?

If you are citizen of the European Economic Area (EEA), you don't need to take the test for the purposes of settlement. You DO need to take the test if you wish to apply for British citizenship.

Can I take the Life in the UK test in a language other than English?

Yes, in Welsh or Gaelic, but only if you live in Wales or Scotland.

Does the test include questions about British history?

There are a few questions that could be considered "history questions", such as "when did the United Kingdom join the European Union?", or "When did women obtain the right to vote?". Unlike the previous version of the test, which included many questions on British history, this current version concentrates on basic knowledge of the country, everyday needs, employment and government.

What happens if I pass my test?

You will be given a "Pass Notification Letter" - you will have to submit it to the Home Office along with all the other documents. Test centres also notify the Home Office electronically.

Can I bring the manual to the test?

No. You may not bring the manual, or any other study materials or tools such as laptop or a mobile phone. Use of dictionaries is also not allowed.

Questions about BritishTest.com's Training Kits

Should I get a Basic Kit or a Complete Kit?

If you feel that you already have an advanced knowledge of topics covered by the test, Basic Kit may be sufficient. We suggest that you take the free test and evaluate your knowledge, before making your decision. On the other hand, you can always upgrade to a Complete Kit if you realize that the Basic Kit is not enough.

What are the accepted payment methods?

You can purchase access using any major credit card, such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express and some others. All payments are processed by PayPal, which means that you can also pay using funds in your PayPal account, if you have one. You don't need to have a PayPal account in order to make the payment.

How long does it take before I receive the kit?

The kits are completely web-based, so the delivery is immediate. You will receive an email with your access information instantly or in a few moments after purchase.

How do I know if my computer is compatible with your training kits?

You will not need to download any software. All you need is a web browser, which you obviously have if you are reading this text. If you wish to study offline, you will need to download the Practice Questions in PDF format. Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free here.

I made a payment, but nothing happens!

If you didn't receive an email message with your access key, please contact us. Make sure that the email you provide to PayPal when making your payment, is correct. In all cases, you will get an email from PayPal (your receipt), which is the proof that you paid. If you didn't get that receipt, chances are that your payment didn't go through, or you provided an invalid email address. Contact us for further assistance.

What is a Simulated Test?

A test simulation recreates all the circumstances of the real test: you will get 24 questions randomly chosen from all testable chapters, and you will have 45 minutes to answer these 24 questions. You will pass if you answer at least 18 questions correctly. Our Basic Kit comes with 10 Simulations, while the Complete Kit offers an unlimited amount of simulated tests.

What is a Completion Certificate?

When you pass your first Simulated Test, we will automatically issue a Certificate which you can download from your Control Panel, and print it out, if necessary. The certificate testifies that you took a training course for the Life in the UK test.

What is Advanced Result Analysis?

It is a feature of our Complete training Kit: after each test, you are shown your right and wrong answers, but also the amount of mistakes per chapter, which allows you to identify your weaknesses and review the relevant material.

What is Express Training?

We selected 200 questions that cover the topics that are VERY likely to be part of the test.

Here's an example. Dozens of questions are possible on the topic of the European Parliament: Where does it meet? How often do the elections take place? What are its members called? What powers does it have? How many seats does the UK have in it? What election system is used? While all these questions CAN appear on your test, some of them are more likely than others. For example, the following question is rather unlikely:

The European Parliament meets in Brussels and in Strasbourg, in ...

north-eastern France
south-eastern France
north-eastern Belgium
south-western Germany

(Right answer: north-eastern France).

While this information is included in the testable material (page 53 of the manual), we consider that there are little chances that it will ever appear on the test, so we exclude it from our Express Training. While Express Training may be sufficient for some people, we do recommend to practice with all the questions, to increase your chances.

Is my personal information safe with you?

We hardly ask for any personal information at all. We never get access to your credit card information, which is handled in total security only by the payment processing company, not us. We are only notified when a payment is successful. We will never share your email address with anybody. In fact, all personal information is deleted after a year - nobody needs access to our training for that long.

How many questions are included in your Kits?

There are 600 questions in the Basic Kit and 1000 questions in the Complete Kit. The PDF file includes 200 questions.

Why don't you offer more questions?

1000 questions are more than enough. More questions would only mean useless work; it means that several questions would be about the same thing, but in a different way; or that some totally unlikely questions would be included. Example:

What country is a "special member" of the Commonwealth?

Nauru
Tuvalu
Tonga
Vanuatu

(right answer: Nauru)

This information is included in the testable material (page 52), but we totally discard it from our training as it would be unreasonable to expect it at the test.

How do I request a refund if I fail the test?

Send us your "Results Notification Letter" (scanned, to email: admin@britishtest.com), and we will refund your fee within 24 hours. Payment must be less than 3 months old: this is a condition imposed by our payment processing company, PayPal. Therefore, we are unable to refund payments made more than 3 months ago.

What if I need technical or other assistance?

You can always contact us - our Customer Service agents will be happy to help.

What is PDF?

PDF stands for Printable Document Format. It means that if you can use a printer - at home, at work or anywhere else - you can print out the Manual and Practice Questions. This way you can practice without a computer, on paper - all you need is a pen. Both our Kits offer the Manual as well as the Practice Questions in PDF format. To open PDF documents, you need to have Adobe Reader installed on your computer. Chances are, it is already there. But if it isn't, you can always download it for free here.

What is a Completion Certificate and how do I get it?

A Completion Certificate is issued automatically to those who passed at least one Simulated Test. You can download it in PDF format from your Control Panel, and print it out. This Certificate testifies that you took a preparation course for the Australian Citizenship Test.

What is Gap Detector?

Gap Detector is a system that shows you exactly to which pages of the manual you should be paying special attention. But first you need to take the full "True or False" test.

I passed my test. How do I stop receiving Daily Tests?

Go to Settings > Daily Test and uncheck the box. If you provided the correct date of your official citizenship test, the Daily Tests will also stop automatically on the date you indicated.
